my week in costa rica was truly divine. more lovely and tranquil than i could have imagined.
i'll be sure to share more photos, but wanted to post my three obsessions during the trip: 1. leafcutter ants (cutest things EVER) 2. three francophile books i read 3. a candid shot taken by the lovely amanda of me doing my favorite exercise in costa rica - "hammocking."
considering the ample reflection and social time i´ve been blessed with here in costa rica, i am feeling good about a next step on the horizon. for years i´ve debated a master´s in social work. actually, it is what i set out to do in university (psych major, soc minor) so the idea continues to beckon moi. in 2004 i completed my master´s in women´s studies and loved the exploration of feminism on such a deep level. over the past few months, i find myself running into women i admire who have MSWs and are running non-profits or doing therapy. i think it is a sign. to top it off, yesterday while swinging in the hammocks (i know, rough week) i found out about a program in the dc area that is reasonably priced and up my alley. after a bit of online research last night i was smitten. to add even more icing to the cake, it offers a dual degree path with a certificate in non-profit management. ooh la la!
just broke the news to beau and look forward to exploring it further when i´m home. this past decade has been an organic evolution of building tranquil space. lord knows i´m by no means done with this journey, but have been pondering what the next decade will present for moi. i believe i´ve found it. the chance to continue trying to make a difference in this new way thrills me.
now that i´ve determined what the next decade holds, i must dine on papaya, pineapple, watermelon, granola, and fresh juice before strolling through the coffee fields and teaching yoga . . .
day 3 waking up in costa rica. truly divine. sun blasts into the windows around 5:30/6am. tres early! find myself crawling into bed around 9ish and giggling for hours with my co-teacher, pary before finally donning my eyepillow and earplugs. sun shines brightly until early afternoon and then we are doused with heavy thunderstorms. the thunderstorms are a true treat to listen to while practicing yoga or reclining in a hammock reading.
found computers yesterday and decided to do occasional twitter and facebook updates, coupled with a few blog posts. no e-mail checking. oddly liberating and truly important for my soul. the world keeps turning, i´m sure about that.
days are filled with cut papaya, yoga, meditation, journal writing, heaps of reading (finished all you need to be impossibly french, almost done with true pleasures: a memoir of women in paris), and napping. i feel blessed. the ladies who joined moi and pary are a true treat. all east coasters from dc, new york, and martha´s vineyard.
had two bad dreams last night. one that was an odd, out of control yoga at work situation where everyone was wearing their shoes during practice, not grasping anything i said, and my iPod kept disappearing. one about being deceived. neither felt good and left me a bit shaken when i woke up. funny how the mind continues turning in such odd ways while we sleep, eh?
off to partake in breakfast (2 hours behind dc here) which is one of my favorite parts of this adventure: cut papaya, watermelon, pineapple, homemade granola with coconut, and whole wheat toast with the most amazing strawberry jam! then journal writing to exorcise these bad dreams and feelings. next 2 hours of yoga at 10am. eat again. free time. 2 more hours of yoga. eat again. to complete the day we plan to sip vino under the stars in the hot tub while nibbling on dark chocolate. ooh la la!
scenes from our fifth annual doga in the park, benefiting the washington human society. special thanks to all of the volunteers from whs and to doggie style bakery for the dog-friendly cakes!
"the aim of life is to live, and to live means to be aware, joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware." - henry miller
as i handle last minute to-dos in preparation for my week away, i was inspired by this quote. it may seem as if you have to dash off to a silent retreat in order to become aware. however, awareness happens best when incorporated into your busy, hectic, crazy life.
here are a few suggestions on finding awareness:
deep breath while waiting for the bus lovingly making a meal feeling all the sensations in your body as you eat, drive, practice yoga sitting still for five minutes, closing your eyes, and "being" during a busy work day truly listening during each conversation - helping to make the other person feel very important petting your cat or dog cuddling with your partner sipping a yummy glass of vino, champagne, prosecco, or tea savoring a bite of chocolate
as a dash off to a country filled with tools for practicing being aware, i wish each of you a decadent week full of joyous, drunken, serene, divine awareness.
two more days before i dash off to costa rica for a week. i *adore* this country. the people, the landscape, the sounds, the succulent papaya - everything is SO special and so different. we have an amazing group of women joining us and i can't wait to dive into the practice of yoga in this amazing setting. truly restorative (despite the flight leaving at the ungodly hour of 6am!).
i won't have e-mail access while away (may get the shakes) so i'm not sure about blogging. hoping to be able to share a muse here and there, but not sure what to expect. i am usually 100% offline when galivanting around this amazing country. here's a peek at our schedule:
truly divine, no? i'll be sure to share oodles of pictures and stories upon return. hopefully all will entail the consumption of papaya. have i expressed how much i *adore* that orange thing? ahhhh!
feeling a nice downshift transpiring in dc right now. last night i spent 2 hours with my teacher training mentees sipping tea outside teaism. truly decadent considering most nights are filled with classes or meetings. to sit and sip for 2 hours felt like i was playing hooky from life. loved it. e-mails are light, people are moving and graduating, others are dashing out of town early for the long holiday, and there seems to be a lot of transition coupled with a slower pace this week. it's a beautiful time of the year!
embrace the downshift. curl up with a good book (currently reading about 50!). nap. listen to music. light a candle. make a spinach salad. watch an indie flick or documentary (just saw tyson - AMAZING). journal about your dreams. make friends with yourself. sit and do nothing. turn off the tv. dash off to costa rica.
"be the change you wish to see in the world." - gandhi

there are SO many ways to make a difference and i've only scratched the surface. please feel free to add to this list in the comments section! xo
considering i'm costa rica bound for a week, i have to really hone in on my MITs to ensure everything gets done before i leave town. however, i've been handling piddly projects most of the morning and doing oodles of social networking. my oh my that twitter stuff is addicting! started following the dalai lama. gotta keep up with his whereabouts, right?
as i settle in for the day i am focusing on my MITs - especially the time sensitive ones. for example, i have a 3-4 page paper due tonight for my creative non-fiction writing class AND i still have to finish the reading associated with the crafting of said paper. in addition, i'm longing for a change of venue. rather than working at the showroom today (a typical monday + friday adventure), i'm going to stay at chez moi to bask in the fragrance of the stargazer lilies (see photo) and the comfort of my home. shaking up routine is a sure way to shift perspective and appreciate the small things.
during book club last friday, blogger extraordinaire all about the pretty mentioned that she has themes in her blog - destination pretty plus eat, drink + be pretty. i loved the idea and am toying with tranquility du jour themes. i think of tranquility du jour as a fusion of spirituality, creativity, entrepreneurship, style, + do-gooding. LOTS of fusion but we are, after all, multi-faceted women with oodles of interests! any suggestions on ways to infuse the themes into your blog experience? would you like to see the interests divided up or do you prefer a cocktail of them all (as i currently do)?
as you can probably tell from this question and my post last week, change is brewing deep within - like a small seedling pushing to the surface. i want to ensure i offer you the musings you need to stay inspired and informed on living a sparkling lifestyle infused with tranquility!
merci beaucoup in advance for your feedback and for your support!

fresh home from a festive doga in the park this afternoon. we had a lovely showing of 4-legged friends and their parents to support one of tranquil space's long-time charities, the washington humane society.
this is one of my favorite events to host as it is such fun to do something that is so special with your favorite furry friend AND for a good cause. win, win!
sir louis is STILL trying to cool down (black fur + smushed face = easy overheating) from all the excitement coupled with oodles of dog cake eating! not easy being louis.
5th annual doga in the park THIS saturday: 1-2:30pm
bring your yoga mat and your canine yogi (bring your own, borrow one, or come alone) for an afternoon of frolicking at rose park (23rd and p st., nw).
tranquil space is teaming up with one of our ongoing charities, washington humane society (whs), and doggie style bakery to create an afternoon of fun focused around your four-legged best friends. i'll lead puppy parents and friends through a complimentary yoga practice for all-levels in the park.
treats will be provided to humans and canines! $10 donation requested for whs. no pre-registration required. just drop by! learn more about whs.
wow, BIG merci for your amazing input + ideas on tranquility du jour. i had NO idea that it resonated with so many people and really appreciate you taking the time to share.
it's funny how once you see what else is out there, it can shake confidence. some may view that as a negative, i see it as a positive (ok, once i get past the drama). for example, people doing things i do (such as writing, teaching yoga, designing versatile clothing) beautifully can be a gentle nudge toward constant improvement. not a bad thing, right?
there is a beautiful notion in buddhism that we are perfect as we are - warts and all! i love this as it encourages a loving acceptance. here's a quote from pema chodron's book start where you are:
We already have everything we need. There is no need for self-improvement. All these trips we lay on ourselves–the heavy-duty fearing that we’re bad and hoping that we’re good, the identities that we so dearly cling to, the rage, the jealousy and addictions of all kinds–never touch our basic wealth. They are like clouds that temporarily block the sun. But all the time our warmth and brilliance are right here. This is who we really are. We are one blink away from being fully awake.
Looking at ourselves this way is very different from our usual habit. From this perspective we don’t need to change: you can feel as wretched as you like, and you’re still a good candidate for enlightenment. You can feel like the world’s most hopeless basket case, but that feeling is your wealth, not something to be thrown out or improved upon.
isn't that empowering? it's finding the balance between "i'm perfect as i am" and "i've got SO much work to do." i like to say that i'm a continual work in progress which is why i enjoy svadyaya (self-study through reflection, journal writing, yoga), oodles of non-fiction books focused on growth, and school (dance, writing, language classes, yoga teacher trainings).
i enjoy sharing this journey with you and appreciate hearing that it makes a difference. improvements to come, but voice will stay. thank you again for your kind words! as a gentle reminder on internal and external beauty, i've attached the hip tranquil chick manifesto. let's keep shining and supporting each other along the way! namaste.
----- haute off the press NEW creative + versatile ways to wear TranquiliT! this new video shows additional ways to don your beloved cardishawl, all-in-one wrap dress, savasana throw, and more. grab a bag of popcorn, a flute of bubbly, kick up your ballet flats, and enjoy a few minutes of eco-fashion fun!
and, i must confess, . . . am feeling a bit lame. oddly enough, i've been writing since october 2004, but haven't really been a blog reader until recently. i see such *amazing* creativity out there. these blogs are gorgeous and filled with such love! it's like eye candy coupled with creative text. yum!
also, taking this creative non-fiction writing class shows me that i've got to be more focused with my writing, less stream of consciousness. so i ask you, dear reader, what would spice up your read of tranquility du jour?
are you in dc on saturday, june 13? join us for a workshop that combines organization, planning and beauty (what girl doesn't love that?).
leading the workshop will be the lovely joanna lo (planner pad customization enthusiast) and julia coney (beauty blogger expert). they will share their tips and tricks for utilizing your journal/planner and streamlining your beauty routine.
here are some great resources on the topics to check out beforehand or in lieu of coming to the event:
I came across this amazing quote by Woodrow Wilson last night: "We grow great by dreams. All big (wo)men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter's evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.”
What dreams are brewing within you? Taking time to step off life's hamster wheel to ponder if you are moving in the direction of your dreams can be scary, even saddening. However, as Plato reminds us, the unexamined life is not worth living. Create space to reflect on your dreams. It's so easy to lose sight of them among the day-to-day. What is one small step you can take this moment to move in the direction of your dreams?
Carry a journal to capture dreams. Note dreams on your planner and in your office. Enlist a dream buddy to help hold you accountable. Never lose sight of the big picture. Dream big, you deserve it!
after debating for months whether or not to keep my not-so-thrifty storage/shipping space for TranquiliT, i will be bringing it back to a home-based business. i adore working in the showroom as it is where i go to focus on creativity. however, since the decision was made late last week, i've been surprisingly excited about one less space to manage and my beloved clothing line return to chez moi.
when you live in 600 square feet, you get used to feeling cozy and making the most of small space. and, there's something oddly intimate about shopping a website and learning that it comes from someone's home.
we've got a few fun events lined up before i transition back home: more planner pad fun, a summer solstice eco-fashion extravaganza, and a creativity immersion.
remember when i asked what your word for the year was? well, mine was *spaciousness* and i'm still LOVING the word and overall concept. less travel. less commitments. more boundaries. more down time. more hot baths. more yoga. less purchasing.
this transition back home will offer up spaciousness in my life despite infusing my tiny home with more stuff. convenience, cost savings, less commuting (only 5 minutes but every 5 minutes adds up!), and a creativity haven within chez moi. life constantly provides icing on the cake, if we will only search for it.
----------------- when debating what to share for my second vidcast, i decided bringing the camera into the boxing ring would be a fun change of pace. with a constant desire to learn new things (always been a little too curious), i took my pink gloves and headed to a boxing gym in january. and, i'm proud to say, i've been going weekly ever since! this is a clip of thursday's session (um, still sore!) with my oh-so-patient trainer donte brown.
during one of our first sessions he asked me what my fitness goals were. i quickly replied, "i want to look like madonna!" now when i moan about running stairs (inhumane!) or doing crunches (doubly inhumane), he reminds me about madonna.
boxing has been humorous, challenging, and rewarding on so many levels. oodles of hand/eye coordination (not my strength) coupled with cardio and learning something totally out of my realm. i hope this makes you giggle (note the pink pumas) and inspires a spark of living outside your comfort zone - that's where life happens whether in a boxing ring, on a yoga mat, or at an art easel.
soooo incredibly sore from the oodles of yoga coupled with boxing on thursday. running stairs and other *inhumane* antics encouraged by my teacher has profound effects for days to come. sunday's tranquility du jour tv will shed light on what goes on when i don pink gloves and my pink pumas.
excited to share the return of wish studio's amazingly creative and inspiring blog. i'll be a columnist shedding light on tranquilology: musings on creativity, spirituality, do-gooding, style, and entrepreneurship for the girl-on-the-go seeking inspired tranquility. doesn't this sound like such fun? all of my favorite things rolled into one. can't wait to get to writing for it!
you've probably heard that writing things down and sharing them makes you more likely to do things. that's why i find blogging to be so powerful. i'm accountable to people i haven't even met! by sharing my decision to take a sabbatical in november, i'm not just mulling it over quietly on my own, i'm committing to doing something incredibly different. is there anything that you are contemplating - a big move, a way of doing things differently, a transition, a new way of thinking - that you would like to share?
as we continue to grow, expand, and try new things, it is essential to have the support (even virtual) of others. it may be just the care and feeding you need to push you out of the oh-so-safe comfort zone. what are you waiting for?
as i sip my iced green moroccan mint tea, hear the beautiful sounds of classical music, and have my fresh linen candle burning, i want to reveal some exciting plans brewing within. about a month ago i began to ponder the notion of taking some time off. not just a jaunt here or there, but an actual step off the hamster wheel that i adore and am highly addicted to. after perusing obligations and committments through the end of 2009, i settled on november as my month.
i'll be galivanting in paris for 10 days, will have just hosted tranquil space's 10-year birthday bash, tranquil space foundation's fall gala will be behind moi . . . so it felt like the perfect time. i have a few plans already set for november: teaching in montreal, baking cookies and greeting yogis on thanksgiving at tranquil space, and a 5-year birthday party for louis the pug. but it was the most unplanned month i could find so i'm doing it!
will probably linger at beau's cabin for a bit, read oodles of books, and reflect on big picture: vision boards, journal writing, yoga, meditation. the idea of slowing down for a month sounds like just what the tranquility doctor ordered!
i hope you enjoy this darling photo of carolyn's pup lola hanging with her planner pad!
"We would like to thank you for taking time to visiting our website and choosing us to support on our programs to re-forest hills and strengthen the communities in the developing countries. We appreciate all the donation we received even though with this straggling economy. As you know we depend on donations to run our programs and continue our projects and eventually expands our agroforest (Forest Garden) education to other countries. Thanks to good friends like you to support us on our cause."
Each online order you place supports this GREAT cause. Merci!
For more great videos on wearing the TranquiliT line, visit our YouTube channel. Watch for the release of a new video highlighting our spring colors: bluebonnet, peony, iris - coming soon!
*absolutely delighted* to share the cover of tranquilista. subtitle and font of title/subtitle is still in flux, but the busy girls-on-the-go plus pug design is final. with every iteration of the cover, i'd ask my editor, "can i share now?," "how about now?" today i got the green light. hope you love it as much as i do!
thanks for all your support during the writing process. i truly couldn't have done it without all the great kudos and feedback that i've received from so many of you since the concept and publication of hip tranquil chick. ahhhh, soon the editing process will begin! the book is expected to hit shelves in january. ooh la la!merci beaucoup for your support.
as i prepare for an afternoon of work at the showroom, i am pondering the week ahead while rain pours outside. so many projects, so many desires, so many dreams, so many to-dos. always tricky to figure out where to start - especially when the rain beckons you to sllloooowwww down.
taught two tres full classes this weekend as yogis came in for dc yoga week, plus a yummy yin/restorative workshop at our arlington location that the lovely lauren wrote about. also tried on fall TranquiliT samples (you're gonna love 'em - one will be released this summer at a special event), saw BFF and company perform, and had a 4-hour strategic planning session with a beloved consultant/friend. a VERY full weekend! in addition, beau and moi nestled in for a great flick on saturday night: broken english. fabulous film, highly recommend! somehow watching a film curled up on the couch with beau nearby, pug cuddled on my lap, and candles burning nearby brings me SUCH tranquility!
ready for your week? one exercise i do at the beginning of the week that i find helpful for focusing is to set key results (or most important tasks as noted in the lovely image from last week). take a moment to ponder what 2-4 things are most important for you to focus your time and energy on. now, take a tiny action step toward making it happen. wanna write a novel? open up a word document and title it "novel." seriously, that is a start!
