"our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. it is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. we ask ourselves, who am i to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? actually, who are you not to be? you are a child of god. your playing small doesn't serve the world. there's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. we are all meant to shine, as children do. we are born to make manifest the glory of god that is within us. it's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. as we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." – marianne williamson
how often do you step back to reflect on how brightly you are shining? i know, probably not a typical reflection over your morning cup of joe or green tea. that’s why i wanted to bring the question to light in this month’s muse and share some ideas on ways to shine. this past month has been full of project after project: recorded new “tranquility to go” yoga cd for fall release, finalized and shot TranquiliT’s fall collection, began french classes at alliance francaise, sent first round of book edits to publisher for tranquilista, applied to MSW program, revamped arlington boutique, minor construction followed by deep cleaning of chez moi. the list goes on and on. i feel like i’ll be able to take a step back to breathe this next week before dashing up to kripalu to teach the following week. slowly picking up the pieces of a whirlwind month.
shining and putting my best self forward can be daunting when juggling deadlines, disorganization at home, care for three beloved animals, personal relationships, and growth plans for organizations. considering i know everyone reading this has a similar situation of juggling work, home, and yoga practice, i felt it apropos to share some tips on staying tranquil and shining amidst transition, deadlines, and chaos:
1. keep up your yoga routine. schedule it into your planner as a non-negotiable – similar to a dentist appointment. 2. carve out fun time. yes, you have deadlines, but in order to be fresh, you have to replenish. 3. indulge in a staycation. traveling is exotic, but can also be stressful. why not play tourist in dc? 4. stay hydrated. when you get in the zone of a project, it can be tough to take time out for basic needs. it’s key to keep your body full of h2o – preferably with a slice of lemon. 5. make time for friends. a quick mug of tea, meeting up for a yoga class, or simply sending a “thinking of you” note helps you stay connected. 6. seek inspiration. i surround myself with inspiring images of paris (my latest obsession), flowers, art, and yoga poses, love reading inspiring updates via twitter, and find solace in the many books that surround me. 7. light candles. even when my home is in chaos from a new delivery of inventory or days of neglect, i am sure to have candles or incense burning to enliven my senses. 8. breathe deeply and observe your sensations. when feeling overwhelmed, this simple task can have profound results. close your eyes, take ten deep breaths, and be fully present in the moment. 9. do things differently. making small shifts to your everyday routine can help bring forth sparkling results. 10. be authentically you. wear a flower in your hair. listen to krishna das at the office. paint your walls yellow. write with a pink pen.
may the final down dog days of summer offer you a burst of tranquility and the chance to shine forth. remember, you are meant to shine brightly. how can you turn the light up a few notches this weekend?

Featured Tranquilista: Bonnie Schmidt is a certified yoga instructor with a background in stress and anxiety relief. After suffering with an anxiety disorder and frequent panic attacks for almost 10 years she devoted a year of her life to study alternative therapies and healing practices to help alleviate the anxiety. Through her journey she found yoga. With a desire to enhance her own practice she signed up to become a certified instructor so she could experiment with what worked best for her in her personal life. After finding much success, and alleviating most of her daily anxiety, she became determined to share what she learned with others that were going through the same thing.
In January 2009 she launched Anxiety to Zen, a website dedicated to educating and empowering people with anxiety disorders. Through this website she shares what she learns and blogs about her journey. She has had the opportunity to share what has helped her along the way with a variety of online publications such as bettyconfidential.com and iamthatgirl.com. Omwork: How can you switch anxiety to zen this week?
you may recall the series of podcasts with kathy kormen frey last summer around this time on the hot mommas project. last week i spoke at her first event and wanted to share the video for anyone seeking inspiration and insights of entrepreneurial challenges. xo
fresh home from an amazing 5-hour shoot of TranquiliT's fall collection by the oh-so-talented sally mannix.
attached are a few of my amateur shots of the NEW girl's all-in-one in noir, the gorgeous momma-to-be in the 2-in-1 maxi in noir, and the stunning new yorker donning the NEW 3/4 sleeve wrap dress in mint, NEW shawl in mint, and SUMMER ADDED sleeveless wrap tunic in noir.
more photos to come later this week. our fall collection will launch online late august/early september in the color palette YOU chose: mint, sky, and mauve!
closet organized, bookshelves organized, armoire/desk organized, style + design books on top of smaller armoire for easy inspiration when working on TranquiliT. ahhhh, now to kick up my tired heels and journal for a few minutes before showering and heading out to face the world for the first time this weekend. i've only spoken with louis (doesn't really count - he's a pug afterall) and beau via phone (he's away for his 20th reunion).
there is something SO cathartic about doing such an in-depth purge of chez moi. i get this opportunity every few years and it was long overdue. cleaning out a section such as a closet or armoire is more seasonal, but the chaos post-floor and paint update left me no choice. had to dive in and am tres glad i did!
note my tea cart of accessories + stack of books i'm reading - my oh my. yes, this IS the after photo. clearly more work to be done! love me some accessories and books. they make the world go 'round: flower pins, sparkly necklaces, scarves, earrings, bracelets, headbands.
note photo to the right of the fireplace. the black square against the wall is my meditation cushion set next to my birdcage of music. perfect for a quiet nook of tranquility.
see louis' beloved teddy. he takes that thing everywhere. teddy is currently resting on the chaise lounge with a bone and louis-size tennis ball.
a few deep clean organizational tips: set aside uninterrupted time. turn on inspiring tunes - i was ALL about pandora. light candles and incense. have piles for "donation," "trash," and "pass along to friend." stay hydrated and enjoy snacks - i noshed on popcorn all night. yum! pull everything out of closets, drawers, etc. as it helps to see everything at once. be prepared for overwhelm but this will help you next time you're contemplating another purchase. ex. i *never* need another scarf - i've accumulated way too many over the years. wouldn't know this if i hadn't touched every one of them today when doing my closet reorg. oh, and have fun with it! i enjoyed reading old journals, thumbing through old photos, and reading birthday cards from seven years ago.
tonight is a photo shoot for TranquiliT's fall line. our same sparkling model is heading in from new york AND we have a lovely maternity model who is glowing. plus a darling child model for our all-in-one for girls. all new for fall - maternity and girls! will share photos soon.
enjoy your sunday! oh, podcast coming tomorrow since beau is busy galavanting and reminiscing with old friends. xo
oh my! this is what i've been living in for the past deux weeks. i had my soot-covered walls (thanks to my obsessive burning of candles) painted while in portland and my sad scratched up parquet flooring replaced with a light white-washed floor to brighten up the space last weekend. considering this huge overhaul and a schedule that keeps me moving most of the time, i was waiting for a chance to dive into putting my space back together with gusto. i got it on saturday - organized for 12 hours. the madeleine peyroux pandora station kept me company into the wee hours. i have 5 hours today before heading out for TranquiliT's fall photo shoot.
since my closet doors open out into a tres tiny room, i've decided to keep them off and am getting track barn doors installed. it's amazing what a coat of paint, fresh floors, and organization can do to bring new life into a home. all of the TranquiliT inventory will be moving over from the showroom this week so those two big wardrobes will house it. aren't they beautiful? back to organizing . . .
feeling stressed, strapped for time, or in need of a big bear hug? moi, too! so, i felt it apropos to share some ideas to get your tranquility on right now or as soon as possible!
tips for tranquility: - hugs, hugs, and more hugs - step away from your work/computer and take a walk around the block - draw your shoulders up to your ears, back, and then slide your shoulder blades into your back pockets - sip tea - nosh on chocolate covered almonds - light a candle or incense - read something inspirational - take one small step toward a big goal - listen to madeline peyroux - do lion's pose and make a funny face - surround yourself with inspiring photos of happy times, places, and people - organize your desk - make an appointment for a massage - do chair yoga - list 5 things for which you are grateful - mist lavender spray or rose water into the air
voila, hopefully you're feeling refreshed, revitalized, and ready to get back into the game of life - creating one that is authentically, sensationally you! xo
as TranquiliT transitions to its new home in kimberly's pink palace, we wanted to share our tips for those of you going through a transition in your own life, be it a move or something else...
set a timeline: what is your goal for the completion date? what benchmarks do you want to set for yourself to keep you on track? for example, aug 15: finish packing the office / aug 17: confirm move date with movers / aug 24: have everything packed, etc.
organize: stock up on labels, colored pens, or whatever else you need to keep yourself organized. pack like with like - develop a system for separating all your goodies. take advantage of having to go through all your items, and set aside a pile for goodwill.
get support: what do you need help with? who has resources that can make your transition a little more tranquil? the friend with the truck and the gal with the amazing organization skills can be super important as your to-do list grows and grows.
finally, breathe. know that change is constant, and enjoy the process!
gearing up for my jaunt to alliance francaise for more fun (aka humiliation). ooh la la! (clearly my fave french word - forgive my overuse).
remember my mention of covering file folders with images that appeal? it's a festive, innovative way to do vision boards or collages. well, sallie ann (a chicago pen pal) sent me these gorgeous shots of her recently covered file folders. gorgeous, eh? anyone else busily designing vision boards and indulging in file folder fun? j'adore her images and have used many in recent collages. decorating file folders is definitely a way to take your tranquility to go and keep your dreams in the forefront.
in addition to file folder decor, i'm recording my 4th yoga class audio cd on friday and finalizing the class. for those of you who have one of my former cds or have a request for an all-level one-hour flow, please pass it along. any sequence or pose you're dying for? happy to cater the class to you! "tranquility to go" will be released in conjunction with our 10-year birthday bash and the first 50 people who come to the event receive a complimentary copy. save the date! would love to see your smiling faces there to honor our first decade.
finally, if you're free this friday night and in the mood for some yummy yoga coupled with local live music with three talented musicians, please join moi for tranquil vibe. these guys are awesome and i've played their music a few times on the podcast. sign up at tranquilspace.com. yay for supporting local musicans and getting your yoga on in the process. that is tranquility to go!
j'adore jaunts in berkley springs. today began with green tea sipping, a hike through the hills, and e-mail handling followed by a trip to the berkley springs farmer's market and a soak in the roman baths topped off with a mini massage. beau captured our journey to the farmer's market for this week's segment of tranquility du jour tv. the colorful flowers, fragrant lavender and chocolate mint (yum!), and succulent peaches were a total treat. supporting local farmers and indulging in hydrotherapy is medicine for the soul!
the versatile all-in-one wrap dress transitions beautifully from a night of dancing to an outdoor wedding to a doga session with your beloved canine companion. ooh la la, truly a summer must-have!
for a custom blend, choose your hem, color, and length through luxe bridal. watch video and peruse illustrations on multiple ways to wear: grecian goddess, one shoulder, tube top, cap sleeve, and more!
bonjour from beau's country cabin. busily penning thank yous and basking in the fresh air.
these few photos were recently passed along by others: wedding in portland plus a doga photo shoot for a german paper the day of my return. i thought they captured the all-in-one wrap dress in a plethora of fabulous settings.
note the feather headband. j'adore feather headbands. anyone have a good source for these? small, local, fab designer?
monday night i hosted my "swan song" (as carol referred to it) with a creativity finale in the TranquiliT showroom. i was joined by a lovely group of ladies who: explored their creative dreams, engaged in free writing, encouraged one another, learned my top 5 tips for creative flair . . . while sipping bubbly and noshing on brie. it was a delightful evening and i, too, came away inspired from their energy. yay for creative dreams! one of my favorite books that addresses creative dreams is by SARK called make your creative dreams real. fun, colorful read. the get your creativity mp3 is available here. what are your creative dreams? what small steps can you take TODAY to move toward making them a reality?

one of my dearest friends returned from a trip to the city of light and brought back a pink eiffel tower for moi and sir louis. (note it hanging off his collar as i hold him - he's not as enamored). my pal dropped them off this evening at the showroom while i was trying on the final samples for the fall collection. ooh la la - i am really loving the new designs and can't wait to share. photo shoot at the end of the month! anyway, back to paris. soooo, this eiffel tower is darling - pink, shiny, and topped with pink crystally things. i MUST find a way to turn this into a necklace.
french class wasn't as traumatic today. actually enjoyed it despite continuing to be the worst pronunciator. maybe i'm not meant to speak it - only appreciate it on print or in music. hmmmm. time will tell. in the interim, i love learning new words. today my faves were belle and beau = beautiful and handsome AND bonne journee = good day.
fabulous strategic planning session with the talented steering committee of tranquil space foundation this evening. save the date: october 8 is our annual gala and this year is sure to sparkle. SO proud of the great work that our amazing group of volunteers is doing in the community and beyond!
now to slumber and dream of pink, sparkly eiffel towers overseeing my creative dreams.
back to the land of the living after two days curled up with louis the pug. summer cold = boo. must confess that lots of sleeping was tres fun. love moi some cuddled in oodles of goose down moments. to top it off, woke up to a vase full of light pink gerber daisies from beau. ahhhhh.
sadly, missed my french class on monday due to the nasty virus, but i'll be back for full embarrassment tomorrow. example a. we learned enchanté, i spelled it au shante. oh my! it helps to have a sense of humor.
wanted to share a source of inspiration that i've discovered and encourage you embrace: sticky foil stars. my office calendar has a star for each day i got my yoga on. have something you're trying to do (daily meditation, pack your lunch, walk to work, write a page of your novel) or that you want to acknowledge and pat yourself on the back for (yoga, learning a new french word, taking photos, writing a blog post, tweeting, volunteering)? of course you do! well, get yourself some foil stars at the local drug store and pretty up your planner pad or calendar. only you have to know what it is for!
oh, recently signed up to peruse etsy. can you believe it's taken me this long? feels like a slippery slope. any favorite designers we must know about?

Featured Tranquilista:
early on diana was inspired and schooled by two great craft role models: her mom, kathy, who could give martha a run for her money, and her great-grandmother, hallie, a professional milliner and expert quilter.
diana's fondest childhood memories are of her mother's over-the-top projects, a few favorites being a handmade barbie wedding dress, sugar diorama easter eggs and a holly hobbie birthday cake that took two days to decorate. almost all of kathy's skills were self-taught, so it's no wonder diana has a decidedly DIY aesthetic. taught to knit, sew and embroider by the age of eight, diana can't remember a time when she wasn't obsessed with the world of fashion (her first subscription to W was at the tender age of 12).
throughout her teen years she struggled with the decision to become either a writer or a clothing designer. her love of books won out at first, but after studying english lit in college and creative writing in grad school, diana finally embraced her superficial side and began working as a stylist and fashion editor. before long she made yet another life-changing decision to trade in all that glam and glory to pursue her real passion: making stuff. but to be honest, she kind of had to: diana's former editor ordered her to stop teaching all of her coworkers to knit on company time. in the summer of 2001 she left san francisco for nyc determined to pursue all things crafty, and in february of 2002 make was started with a friend. in 2003, diana began running the business solo. now she spends her days teaching, dreaming up new workshops, and writing crafty books. in november of 2007 her first foray, SEW: sew everything workshop was published by workman.

Omwork: How can you indulge in some DIY this week?
the lovely kaileen and tiffany sent moi these GORGEOUS vision boards that they designed during a recent artist date. tres inspiring! a BIG merci for sharing your creative work.
if you're interested in getting your creativity on, join moi on monday at the TranquiliT showroom (final event there) for a creative extravaganza. learn my top five tips for creative flair. not local? consider the mp3!
in august i'll be doing my yoga and creativity week at kripalu. consider a week of healthy dining, yummy yoga, creative expression, oodles of artist dates, meditation time, hiking, and more!
for my own creative inspiration, i'm acknowledging my yoga practices with gold foil stars, rearranging my surroundings, filling up my damask ideas book, seeking blank space (on walls and counters), and planning reorganization days to declutter. what's on the horizon for your creative self?
beau and i had a *delightful* trip despite travel drama on both ends that included missed connections, delayed flights, and loads of airport time.
the wedding was lovely (gleefully danced to "pour some sugar on me," "thriller," and "dancing queen"), i took five yummy yoga classes, picked up a new feather and flower headband, spent five hours at powells (bought 6 books - see photo), and got to see oodles of old friends. here are some snapshots of our sojourn, including a fabulous boutique i browsed (note the french theme) and lovely roses that lined the street outside the wedding location.
of course i had to include a photo of sir louis who we picked up this morning. he's been sleeping ever since. never seen him so worn out. yay canine camp!
crawling into bed after a 15-hour day return to reality. the past two weeks of travel with a birthday in between as led my planner pad loving self into a much-fuller-than-normal planner pad! oh, and to top it off i started french classes today. yet again, worst pronunciator in class. how can that be considering it is a 101 level? is there a basic basic? more to come on this exciting drama-filled train wreck. c'est la vie. xo
there are few feel-good luxuries that match the feeling of warm sun on your (SPF-lathered) skin. summer is a time where pants become capris and long sleeve turn into camis.
as you go about your day, moving between the heat of the outside and the chill of the inside can be uncomfortable. the tranquiliT savasana throw is the perfect antidote.
the throw can be draped over your shoulders in chilly office buildings and on the plane for travel. it can also be draped over your head, and it works beautifully as a bathing suit cover-up.
the savasana throw comes in noir, bluebonnet (pictured), peony, iris, and au naturel.
bon soir from the newark airport. more travel delays means no pug-cuddling tonight (boo!), an early morning return to dc, and e-mail catch up at the airport rather than the comfort of freshly painted chez moi.
on july 4, beau and 2 friends headed to an indie theatre in portland to see food, inc. if you haven't seen it yet, i HIGHLY recommend the film. eye-opening! in the interim, learn 10 simple steps toward more mindful eating including eating at home, support your local farmer's markets, know where your food comes from, buy organic, and more. choose humane eating and meatless mondays.
to help you along the green path, i wanted to share this AMAZINGLY yummy, yummy salad courtesy of diane renzulli via childhood friend mandie desmond:
1 bag spinach 1 pint strawberries (i use a quart) toasted slivered almonds--lightly browned
dressing: 1/2 cup sugar (you don't need this much!) 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 tsp worstechere sauce 1 and 1/2 tsp minced onion 1/4 tsp paprika 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1/2 tsp sesame seeds 1/2 tsp poppyseeds
here's a snippet into my sojourn to oklahoma a couple of weeks ago: drive-by graceland in memphis, dining at sonic (beau's first drive-in experience), family time at olive garden (my favorite "restaurant" - seriously!), and a drive through the gorgeous wichita mountains where beloved pug is confused by the "puppies" (aka bison and longhorn).
yesterday began with unfortunate news about a break-in at our arlington studio. boo. beau and moi did our best to put out the fires from the west coast with help from our amazing team.
then we began our looonnnngg walk to powells to meet up with my first fabulous assistant (circa 2003) who just moved to portland. along the way i indulged in a soy chai latte and my belly felt it all day. apparently my belly no longer likes these, prefers herbal or green teas. alas, i must listen and say "au revoir" to that beloved drink for now.
sipped lovely lemongrass tea at powells while catching up with kat, then browsed for about 2 hours. here are 2 snapshots of a couple favorite sections: women in business and paris! kat and i proclaimed, "don't let me buy another book" when we saw each other. texted "maybe 1 or 2" along the way. i walked out with 4, she walked out with 5. yes, we have a problem and powells is the ultimate in book-store browsing. captured on camera, my 4 must-haves: feminist activism, female leadership, biz, and paris.
next we met up with more tranquil space yoginis: the lovely arwa (a recent transplant) and michelle (here on vacay) for yoga at root and dining at a wine/cheese bar. that's where i got the artisan oreo you see in the photo. thought that would help my belly and indeed it did! just what the doctor ordered.
the day ended with a divine mani and pedi (finally got to experience lincoln park after midnight - has sparkles) and dining at a fondue restaurant. beau's cousin, sara (in photo), and i enjoyed a nightcap in my room watching late night tv.
loving my time in this amazing city. now off to get my yoga on while beau slumbers . . .
ella fitzgerald is serenading moi while my mint mojito candle makes the hotel room feel like home. finally in portland and settling in post way-longer-than-planned journey here. we were to arrive 20ish hours before we actually did and got to spend the night in a houston hotel SANS luggage. ahhh, gotta love life's curve balls. it keeps it all more exciting. of course, i did snag a few extra minutes in the houston airport borders and came across this cute book: don't get caught with your skirt down: a practical girl's recession guide. seems pretty entertaining/enlightening!
we're here for beau's brother's wedding and i have a plethora of dear friends to see here, too, so our schedule is quite full. first stop: powell's. my heart skips a beat just thinking about all the books! i'll be sure to capture all i can on film to share.
in the interim, i wanted to pass along these three visions of delicious eye candy. so the cupcakes speak for themselves. don't they make you salivate? yum! they were sent by a dear yogini on my birthday. next is sir louis napping in the back of the car with his beloved "teddie" during our intense road trip last week. last, i set out my accessories when i got to the hotel and thought the colors and sparkles were too fabulous to not share!
now, to bed. wishing you all a *gorgeous* holiday full of sparkles and more sparkles! xo
whether you are headed to the beach, hanging with family, or indulging in a staycation in your own city, take some time this weekend to live green.
here are our top five favorite ideas for the holiday weekend:
{1} buy local at your farmers market {2} pick up trash from the street, park, or beach {3} plant flowers and herbs {4} cook and eat with foods in season {5} use reusable plates and utensils
