hold strong to, that, “we must create what we most need to find.”
‘As we have barreled deeper and deeper into a technological / result driven 21st century now more than ever I do believe we need to be bought home to the presence of our living. to allow the restful validation of your own tender true humanity, may this work be a living ode to our living. I am striving to create both a visual and emotional unfolding through the textural interchange of photography, sound, collage, film and found objects. Workshops + Retreats: Online creativity circle starts this week! Annual Fall Foliage retreat to the hills of Virginia October 16-18 and 10-year birthday bash on October 30. In 2010, consider the 3rd annual New Year's Gala, 4th annual Hip Tranquil Chick retreat March 26-28, and a week long sojourn to lush Costa Rica May 22-29. All the scoop is on my workshops page. Featured Tranquilista: Lisa Sonora Beam doesn’t go for the whole “starving artist” thing. She’s worked for decades on her rebuttal: She thrives as a mixed-media artist, writer, and founder of Digital Hive EcoLogical Design, a San Francisco–based communications firm that works with green businesses. She earned her MBA in Sustainable Enterprise, whose business theories form the strategic backbone of this book.
Lisa has learned that business savvy in an artist is rare: most creative people shy away from the strategic skills necessary to make a living doing what they love. So after yet another artist friend responded to Lisa’s business insights with, “I never thought about that,” she decided to help make sure they did.
Over the course of 20 years teaching workshops, Lisa has honed her techniques for transforming passion into livelihood. She’s taught at leading learning centers like Esalen Institute and Hollyhock, and has been featured in Entrepreneur and Business Week. She develops courses in Green & Social Marketing and has taught at Dominican University's Green MBA. In the studio, she creates mixed-media paintings, artist books, assemblage structures, and continues to run Digital Hive.
With The Creative Entrepreneur, Lisa has finally put passion to paper to help artistic types develop and harness their business savvy. The Creative Entrepreneur is the culmination of an eclectic life of business and art, strategic planning and creative calling. It’s Lisa preaching what she’s practiced: that it’s possible and practical to make a living doing what you love.
A thriving San Francisco Bay Area transplant from Chicago, Lisa lives and works out of a former warehouse that is in various stages of green renovation, where she fantasizes about the perfect organizer for all her art supplies and of sleeping in a Moroccan tent on her (permit pending) living roof.

Featured Tranquilista:
early on diana was inspired and schooled by two great craft role models: her mom, kathy, who could give martha a run for her money, and her great-grandmother, hallie, a professional milliner and expert quilter.
diana's fondest childhood memories are of her mother's over-the-top projects, a few favorites being a handmade barbie wedding dress, sugar diorama easter eggs and a holly hobbie birthday cake that took two days to decorate. almost all of kathy's skills were self-taught, so it's no wonder diana has a decidedly DIY aesthetic. taught to knit, sew and embroider by the age of eight, diana can't remember a time when she wasn't obsessed with the world of fashion (her first subscription to W was at the tender age of 12).
throughout her teen years she struggled with the decision to become either a writer or a clothing designer. her love of books won out at first, but after studying english lit in college and creative writing in grad school, diana finally embraced her superficial side and began working as a stylist and fashion editor. before long she made yet another life-changing decision to trade in all that glam and glory to pursue her real passion: making stuff. but to be honest, she kind of had to: diana's former editor ordered her to stop teaching all of her coworkers to knit on company time. in the summer of 2001 she left san francisco for nyc determined to pursue all things crafty, and in february of 2002 make was started with a friend. in 2003, diana began running the business solo. now she spends her days teaching, dreaming up new workshops, and writing crafty books. in november of 2007 her first foray, SEW: sew everything workshop was published by workman.

Her work has been featured in national design publications and regional art shows and is inspired by her incredible friends and family. Leigh has lived in Boston for six years and likes it so much she only occasionally wishes it were Paris.

Bonjour! Welcome to the 141st edition of tranquility du jour: a guide to bringing tranquility to your every day.
Today’s podcast (originally podcast as hip tranquil chick #9 all the way back in 2005) consists of a restorative way to celebrate the holidays, and more fabulous podsafe music - Symmetrical Angels Part 2 by 2-RD. (Note Louis the Pug snoring throughout the entire podcast!) View our shownotes at kimberlywilson.com/blog. Restorative poses to help keep you fresh throughout the holidays
This sequence is perfect for rejuvenating over the holidays and can be done in a few minutes or, if you can carve out the space, savor this sequence for at least 30 minutes!
Extra doses of tranquility include a silk lavender-filled eyepillow, a scented candle burning nearby, the phone turned off, rosebud salve on your lips, a lush pillow or blanket nearby, and a yummy essential oil rubbed onto your temples. Have a blanket or bolster nearby for #4-6.
1. Begin on your back and extend your legs up the wall. For a shoulder opener, bring the arms up over your head and reach for opposite elbows. Notice your breath and feel the body soften.
2. For a variation, open your legs to a wide V.
3. For another variation, bend your knees and place the soles of the feet together. Stay here as long as feels good.
4. Take a blanket or bolster and roll it tightly lengthwise. Place the blanket vertically behind your tailbone, and lie back over the blanket. Let your arms splay out to the sides or up over your head.
5. Place the blanket horizonally under the shoulderblades (at your bra line) and roll back over the blanket. This one is a huge heart opener and so powerful.
6. Come to child's pose but gring your big toes together and open your knees wide. Place the blanket in between the knees and rest over the blanket(s), turn your head to either side.

Off the Mat: A life-long obsession with sound has guided Alanna in the direction of music and vibration. Through the teachings of yoga, she has found a home for her spirit within the pulsations of the heart. She was born with a hearing impairment, but was taught from an early age that this is neither a setback or a difference. Instead, it is a way to thrive and shine. And so she has, by becoming a vocalist, a teacher, a musician, a writer, and a lover of music, sound, meditation, inspiration and vibration.
Her teachers are Sharon Gannon and David Life, the creators of Jivamukti Yoga. Sanskrit scholar, Manorama, has graced Alanna with a deeper knowledge of how sound profoundly affects us on an energetic and cellular level. Her practice has also been heavily infused with the love-filled influence of Shri Dharma Mittra, a teacher who revealed the true, devotional nature of asana practice. As an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Instructor, she fills her classes with Nada (sound), Bhakti (devotion) and Shraddha (faith). Her classes feature an unyielding spirit for bringing yoga off the mat and into the world. Her face forward, charismatic style are the perfect platform for classes that are masterful, artistic, and always feature an element of mystery.
While on her world tour, she has lead kirtans (devotional singing concerts) and has also performed with Dave Stringer, who has been a musical inspiration to Alanna. Recently, while in Sydney, Australia, Alanna found herself in the midst of a tidal wave of opportunity, and through riding that wave, she had the opportunity to write, create and produce her newest album, Shine. This inspirational and eclectic album has been described by her friends as 'eclectic lounge pop that you would want to listen to on a coastal drive'. It features several of Australia's prominent jazz musician and other Australian talent. Shine includes 2 songs in Sanskrit for your energetic body, and the rest of the groovy tracks are in english to ignite the soul.
Alanna also produces a yoga podcast called "Yoga Jam with the JivaDiva". The success of the JivaDiva Yoga Jam podcast has given Alanna a worldwide audience of nearly 400,000 listeners. Every week, people tune in to receive the vibrations and teachings of yoga from Alanna. The podcasts feature a variety of formats and include Alanna's own music in the background. Alanna, the JivaDiva has been featured on Lime.com and Body + Soul Magazine.
She teaches at the Yoga Journal Conferences, and is on staff with the Omega Institute. Her article about loving mantras was published in the October 2007 issue of Yoga Journal. In the February 2008 issue of Yoga Journal, she was named as one of Jivamukti Yoga's "Who's Who," and in the March 2008 issue, she was profiled as one of the next generation of yoga teachers shaping yoga's future (see the article).
Alanna's believes that faith (shraddha) can accomplish anything, and that belief has, over and over again, allowed her to achieve the seemingly impossible.
