bon soir

organize, organize, organize. this whole week has been all about organizing, weeding out, simplifying, and setting up new systems. yesterday beau and i moved TranquiliT's inventory out of a rented showroom and into my dining room. shhhh . . . lest you realize how tiny and humble our operations are. i love having all the yummy bamboo pieces at my fingertips and after a few months of backlog, it's exciting to be back on track with this creative outlet. watch for website updates and fun, new sales coming just in time for the holidays. and, you'll be happy to know, that each piece is wrapped with tons of love in the pink palace.

gearing up for tomorrow's trunk show at tranquil space. so excited to see what all the vendors have to share. i love being under the same roof with so many creative women!

happy to share that hip tranquil chick was featured among holiday gift ideas at treehugger.com.
woo-hoo! the lovely maria fyodorova told me and writes a tres cool blog: righteousrestyle.com.

wanted to share a quote by one of my fave cool chicks ever - anais nin: "how wrong it is for a woman to expect the man to build the world she wants, rather than to create it herself."

spring fashion preview

tonight was a lovely night off from my normal routine (although i missed my little buggers at tranquil space arlington). i hit a lovely event at the corcoran outlining spring 2008 fashion. i know, if you're like me, you're probably still trying to find the perfect winter coat and haven't even questioned what the spring 2008 must-have colors might be. well, i'm here to inform you of the following:

1. gotta indulge in citrus and sorbet colors - perfect b/c i'm doing a lovely tangerine for TranquiliT!
2. layering upon layering is in.
3. one shoulder dresses are popular again.
4. high-waisted full pants are the new skinny pant.
5. big prints - like paisleys blown up - are popular.
6. dresses over pants are replacing the tunic over leggings look.
7. caftans are cool (see photo above).
8. big and billowy is in.

fun stuff, eh? let's get through fall fashion first but i just had to share my new-found knowledge!

rainy monday

louis and beau helped me sign in classes at the studio on thanksgiving - note the fresh baked cookies and lovely pink and white poinsettia! after classes i found that the lovely julia and jlo (pictured in the photos) were having a planner pad 2008 planning par-tay so i gleefully invited myself over while beau cooked up the tofurkey. look at us going to town with papers, stickers, glue, and tape while decorating our planner pads.

was up until 2am organizing last night. finished the closet clean out, did some holiday gift buying (rosemary trees for delivery), worked with a consultant on some website redesigns, and took a yummy bath filled with a LUSH bath bomb.

today i returned to the doctor for more investigation into the odd gastrointestinal drama. he's putting me on a special diet coupled with a morning and evening pill. gotta stay away from chocolate, tomato sauce, onions, and more fun stuff. bummer. should be an interesting month!

signed up for an exciting 15-week program with naropa university in boulder that starts in january. love, love, love learning. addicted actually. so much to learn, so little time.

the outside rain makes me very sleepy. may need a nap before yoga tonight. hope you're having a lovely recovery from any holiday drama.

hip tranquil chick podcast #110: exploring musicology

Welcome to the 110th edition of the Hip Tranquil Chick podcast: a guide to life on and off the yoga mat.

Today’s menu features a must-have pose in On the Mat, exploring musicology with Michelle Payne in Off the Mat, and we’ve got Omwork and Savvy Sources for you too. View our shownotes at hiptranquilchick.com/blog.

On the Mat: neck rolls

Off the Mat: Michelle Payne has been in love with music since her toddler years. As a young girl, she decided she wanted to be a performer after seeing an episode of "Fame". Watching all of those actors dancing and singing around the fountain looked like the best place to be in the world. As a teenager, she found herself in a high school just like the one on Fame. At 14, Michelle was accepted into the Vocal Music program at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to studying music at least 4 hours a day, she competed in vocal contests, performed in musicals, and taught herself how to play the guitar. After high school, she was awarded music scholarships from several colleges as well as the Micheal Jackson Music Education foundation. She studied music at the college level for 2 years, but decided to take a break and study new subjects. She continued her education, but went on to earn a degree from the University of North Florida in Sociology and Religious Studies. Changing academic tracks did not change her musical aspirations. In addition to leading her own Rock band, she also began teaching private music students in guitar, piano, and voice. This is when she realized how much fun it is to teach. That was about 6 years ago, and now Michelle teaches 30 private students as well as 55 high school students at YULA high school. She has even added drumming and percussion to her curriculum. Michelle's laid back style is what draws so many students to her studio. She believes in inspiring kids to play music, not forcing it on them. "I had a lot of mean teachers. I learned a lot from them, but I wish they had been a little nicer and more supportive," says Payne. These experiences are what shaped her views on what music education should be. "I believe in making sure each student is having fun. If they enjoy classical music, then that's what we'll play. If they hate classical, then we'll find something more suitable for his or her tastes."

Omwork: To encourage a sense of diving deeper into today’s podcast, I will post Omwork relating to this segment on our HTC forum. Please connect with fellow HTCs there and play with the following:

1. How has music impacted you over the years?
2. Is their an instrument that you'd love to play?

pecan pie for breakfast

yum! god bless the dessert staples of thanksgiving! i've been dining on it non-stop. oh, with a dash of lite cool whip. decadence.

beau is home visiting family so i've been an organizing machine. began pulling everything out of my closet while he slept post-tofurkey and am slowly making progress of getting it all put back together. i finally decided to part with a dress i bought for a wedding when i lived in colorado in 1996. i haven't worn it since then and can't believe it's been taking up space all these years. my desk is piled with paperwork from my time in new york and this past holiday week. i can't wait to tackle it and bring some tranquility back to my work space (and closets!).

last night we hosted bhagavan das at the studio. what a gem! his music is magical and his presence is large. while organizing last night i had his music blaring and it helped turn my closet cleaning into a spiritual experience. everything can be a spiritual experience, eh? even eating pecan pie for breakfast.

a well-accessorized tofurkey day!

happy *almost* thanksgiving! i must confess that i'm tres grateful for each of you. my past 3 years on the blog world have been an absolute treat as it's connected me to so many similar souls that i would never have met in person. merci, merci, merci!

after a day packed with meetings from 9:45-6, plus teaching at our arlington studio, i've baked the chocolate chip cookies that i serve each year at tranquil space's charity yoga classes. am heading to bed early to ensure i'm bright-eyed and bushy-tailed behind the front desk in the morning. this is one of my favorite things each year - welcoming amazing students in family-like fashion to the studio each thanksgiving. when the studio was smaller, i knew everyone, knew everyone's significant others, had the holiday parties (and studio) in my living room, and i miss that personal touch. each thanksgiving i feel like i get to reclaim it.

the above photo shows some of my fabulous nyc finds - sparkly headbands, 4 pairs of shimmery earrings, must-have mala beads, silver knee high socks to wear under tall boots, and silver bangle bracelets - some with sparkles. not shown are fabulous knee high skull and crossbones socks plus the most amazing faux fur leg warmers. you know those crazy, funky fur boots that must be tres warm? well these are a great cheap, chic, cruelty-free substitute. i stumbled across this lovely new designer market and HAD to have 'em.

happy thanksgiving. i'm soooooo grateful for you! xo

bonjour, bonjour, bonjour

feeling very french-like these days while choosing decor for something new AND tres exciting that will be happening this spring. deets to come!

i've been sharing "the past of least resistance" theme with friends in crisis as of late. i love this new mantra. keeps me sane and less reactionary. always a struggle.

had a fun soiree with the tranquil space foundation steering committee last night at the pink palace. we celebrated the success of the first gala and our accomplishments of our first year. such exciting work and i love seeing it grow with our wonderful team.

since my return from the big apple on saturday night at 11pm, life has been exciting and exhausting at the same time. i've sat down to blog numerous times, only to have the phone ring or an urgent e-mail come through. i feel as though i have so much to share: thoughts on a class i took friday night that left me feeling "oogy," shopping for fabulous accessories in ny - complete with a photo of my finds, and more. have been doing numerous podcasts with amazing authors - have about 6 very exciting ones in backstock just waiting to meet you all! hope you were as inspired by john's (of the why cafe) as i was.

promise to sit down and share much more when my world stops spinning. must dash for a 12:30 wax appointment (gotta keep those brows in check). in the meantime, i hope you enjoy this piece from my weekly column on greening your holidays!

p.s. got a call from mama in oklahoma last night. apparently there is a fun write-up of hip tranquil chick in the latest fit yoga issue! crazy that my oklahoma mama gets the scoop before we do, eh?

ahimsa muse by sharon gannon

i wanted to share this thought-provoking piece on ahimsa (non-harming) by sharon gannon - co-founder of jivamukti yoga. stay tuned for a podcast with her coming soon.

Ahimsa: The Foundation of the Yoga Practice

Yoga is suddenly becoming popular all over the world, and at the same time, we are in the midst of a global crisis. Human beings have caused this crisis, but yoga may hold the potential to save the planet, because yoga teaches us how to live harmoniously with the world, and with all other beings and things. As a species, we have forgotten how to do that, and yoga is waking us up and reminding us how to live. When we rediscover our connectedness to the whole, the shackles of culture will fall away and we will find ourselves in the land of freedom. Yoga teaches us that every action we take matters, and everything that we experience in our life is a direct result of how we have treated others in our past, kindness is the only action worth pursuing and the best way to uplift our own lives is to do all we can to uplift the lives of others. Ahimsa is the foundation practice for these realizations, and is vitally important for the understanding of yoga and how it works.

Ahimsa allows compassion to arise within us. This compassion provides us with the means to let go of "otherness" in order to see our self in the other, our true Self. The biggest obstacle to that realization is seeing others as separate from you. What is realized in the enlightened state is Oneness: the interconnectedness of all beings. Ahimsa is a key practice in facilitating this awareness.

Patanjali gives us the very practical practice of Ahimsa as a means to this yogic realization of the interconnectedness of all beings. As the first yama, meaning restraint, ahimsa provides a suggestion of how we might direct our behavior towards others - as long as you see others, don't harm them. Patanjali also tells us that if you continue to practice non-harming, you change, as well as the people around you, and eventually the whole world positively changes. He says that when you become established, pratisthayam, in this practice of not harming others, then others will stop harming you, not just physically, but through their thoughts and words, too.

Wow! Imagine living your life in that kind of security and ease; never worrying that someone is thinking or dreaming something negative about you. You always appear as a benevolent presence in their waking, as well as nightly dreams. No one speaks harshly to you or gossips about you. No one is looking to hit you or bang you over the head. No one will ever wish to terrorize you, exploit, or harm you in any way. You will live within a society of peace.

In order to create that society of peace, we must understand how karma works. According to the laws of karma, everything has a root cause, and so whatever we want, we can have, if we are willing to provide it for others first. If we want happiness, then we must make others happy. If we want to be free, then it seems we shouldn't make a slave of anyone. If we want enlightenment for ourselves, then we must begin to see others as holy, enlightened beings. Through such purification of perception, one becomes enlightened, because ultimately, it will take an enlightened being to see another enlightened being (it takes one to know one). The practice of ahimsa helps us to further understand the laws of karma in order to alter our perception of ourselves and others.

To live in a way that our own life would enhance the lives of others is a radical concept, as it gets to the very root of how happiness comes about. If we want to be happy, we do what we can to bring others happiness, not suffering. Yogis by nature are radical; not content to live superficial lives, but instead, they enjoy diving into root causes. Patanjali opens his Yoga Sutras with: atha yoganusasanam PYS 1.1, which translates as: "Now this is yoga as I have observed it in the natural world," implying that any of us could come to these yogic realizations if we were willing to look deeply into causes, and not just skim the surface by identifying with superficial, disconnected symptoms.

We live in a culture that tells us that the earth belongs to us, and it is our right to exploit others for our own needs and desires. A yogi on the other hand, realizes that violence only brings more violence. Violence can never bring peace. By understanding how things come about, a yogi then consciously attempts to choose their actions wisely, doing their best to plant only the seeds they wish to reap.

stop me before i buy again

another exciting day of software training coupled with a yummy jivamukti class (that included a kiss on the check from the lovely russell simmons when i reminded him that i was his "hip hop yoga teacher"). during my quest around ny looking for a new nose ring with my post-yoga glow, i "stumbled" upon barnes and noble. my journey pulled up zero tattoo/piercing salons so i found comfort in a bookstore open until 11pm. um, and i left with four more books. bonjour, my name is kimberly and i have a book-buying problem!

this morning i was late to training because i realized that i was missing my planner pad. gasp! had to return to the hotel and head back up to the 10th floor in a very slow elevator. by the time i arrived to my scheduled meeting at the training, i was a bit frazzled and sleep deprived. the wake-up calls from the hotel at ungodly hours (7 or 8am) is painful! i'm used to waking up on my own or with a "feed me" bark from louis and have been in deeeepppp sleep when the phone rings. woe is moi. anyway, i was babbling on about a current woe during my morning meeting and i received the best advice ever: take the path of least resistance. genius! it's so important to pick our battles and to realize when it's just not worth the energy. such a fine line to walk . . . but a crucial one to figure out if we want to maintain tranquil mental health.

in case you were drawn to the democratic debates tonight and are curious about with presidential candidate you're most aligned with, check out glassbooth. this site is great and helps us get clear on the issues - complete with links to educate on the issues. 'night.

new york rocks my world

today's software training was insightful and caused eye-glazing at times. i get lost in the data but loving hearing their tips on customer service, marketing, and fun stuff. data isn't so fun for me. i'm here with our lovely studio manager learning the ins and outs of the software system we've had for almost 5 years. no time like the present! well, in my defense, it changes constantly. they are always adding new, cool features.

after today's 8-hour training, i headed over to FIT for a panel on eco-fashion. very interesting and sooo exciting to hear the many ways in which companies from wal-mart to barney's are trying to behave in a more green "fashion." among those mentioned were stella mccartney and linda loudermilk. geniuses! then dinner with a special being who is a former professional ballerina and designer of trienawear. always a treat to connect with a fellow niche clothing designer to laugh about the ongoing mishaps of the business. for example, ordering 700 yards of a fabric that you've planned a new design around only to find out it is lighter weight than what you designed for. or that the color isn't quite right. or that the fabric shrinks substantially when washed so the patterns have to be made larger to accommodate for the shrinkage. ahhh, always something and when you are a small operation and it sure helps to have a chuckle about it.

yesterday i got in a class at jivamukti and was delighted to have the lovely russell simmons behind me while practicing. how do i always manage to take classes at the same time he does? i must have an angel watching over me! then i took a class at the learning annex on clothing and accessory manufacturing. apparently these few days in new york are ALL about learning!

oh, and while walking to the wrong address with all my luggage yesterday (yep, 4 blocks further than necessary b/c i read my training address rather than my hotel one!), i passed some fun bead shops full of big, chunky beads. gotta hit those over the next few days and carve out some serious creative beading time next week. beau and pug are heading up to ny after thanksgiving to see family. i plan to lie low, do some yoga, bead, and tackle some deep cleaning. can't wait! off to bed. gotta rest these eyes for tomorrow's software par-tay!

don't cry over burnt popcorn

bonjour from the wified bus to nyc! i'm a train girl with a bus budget so here i am, on a comfy bus with wifi access heading to my fave city. what more could a girl want? well, i was recently introduced to the most fabulous catalouge EVER - brocade home. while perusing the site yesterday, i came across this darling tool set. can you stand it? makes me want to get handy.

a BIG thank you to those who joined me yesterday for the hip holidays teleclass. it was a treat to connect with you all. i hope that the eight petals of creating a tres hip and tranquil holiday gets us all started on the right stiletto. as promised, here is the alternate nostril breath instruction that we went over on the teleclass. enjoy!

i woke up yesterday with a fairly unscheduled day that i had hoped would allow for some spaciousness. got down from my cozy loft bed to check e-mail and feed louis breakfast for the third time (he's very demanding) before hoping to crawl back into bed to read for a few hours. well, my plans were thwarted with numerous must-attend-tos. needed to squeeze in a photo shoot for the examiner and he couldn't do the afternoon so it had to happen in the morning since i was leaving for ny today. it wasn't your basic pose in fun yoga positions shoot as my new series is on healthy holidays so i had to get creative and pull together props. not easy to do when you're really wanting to crawl back into bed with a juicy (ok, the truth -- non-fiction businessey) book.

one of the props required me to make popcorn. i'd purchased it from a friendly boy scout at a random store in deleware weeks ago. the instructions said to heat 2-5 minutes so 3 seemed like a good idea. well, i noticed that it wasn't popping anymore, opened the microwave and saw a ton of smoke. took it outside to cool down. the little booger smoked for 5 more minutes before i got the grand idea to water it down. the whole center of the bag was black and charred. the house smelled like this all day. the poor photographer didn't mention it - suffered in silence. beau said he could smell it from outside! during my practice at the studio last night, i kept smelling something on my shirt and realized it was . . . that darn burnt popcorn smell.

the day was filled with random unexpected drama after random unexpected drama. needless to say, i didn't crawl back into bed until it was time to retire for the evening but i learned a few lessons along the way: 1. choose the lower end of the boy scout popcorn heating suggestions; 2. remember that these situations will be comical when they are over; 3. life is full of ongoing situations that thwart our best-laid plans or hopes of down time. it's best to go with the flow, don't fight it, stay in the present moment to tackle the challenges head on. 4. don't cry over burnt boy scout popcorn.

the joys of cafe writing

i met up with a girlfriend this morning to focus on finishing my agent's edits (from 8.31 - ugh!) to my tranquilology proposal. i'm in absolute heaven here at a comfy cafe at 14th and u. sitting in an old rust-colored velour armchair typing away with my cup of jasmine tea nearby makes me tres happy! funky cafe tunes are playing, the sun is shining, i'm doing something that has been set aside due to multiple dramas the past few months and it feels sooo good! better get back to writing and immerse myself in the flow. happy sunday!

friday festivity

here's a sneak preview at my spring design plans for 2008. fall debuted a little late so i sat down with my assistant today to pull together my must-haves for a sassy spring.

the top left piece is a brand new design that can be worn as a long skirt or full tube dress; we threw a belt around it for fun and LOVED it! i've been wanting a long, yummy, flowy piece forever and this is the perfect one.

the next piece is fall's grecian tunic sans sleeves in a juicy shade of blue.

last featured piece is the newly designed wrap top in a succulent tangerine color. the first wrap top that i did in 2004 stayed with us for many seasons. this one is a new twist on this staple piece. there are a few more pieces including a batwing tunic dress and a kimono sleeve wrap. can't wait to unveil it in 2008!

another night at home. picked bonnard (chubby, grouchy, black cat) up from his surgery (pimple removal) and all went well. he's pimple free and they'll check it with a pathologist next week. did a podcast with jessica porter of hip chick's guide to macrobiotics. you'll love this one, too. all sorts of good ones coming your way! a few fun meetings and then took a lovely 2-hour restorative workshop at the studio tonight and it was divine. yum!

two recent mentions in the blog world that i've been made aware of and had to share:

1. graffitipink
2. indyish

on graffitipink, i came across this great quote by the fabulous gloria steinem: "a liberated woman is one who has sex before marriage and a job after." it made me smile.

the weekend promises yoga, writing time, and some creative license thanks to unstructured time. i'm delighted. may you carve out some unstructured time this weekend to laugh, read, write, dance, and be. au revior.

quiet night in

while doing my typical dash between meetings tonight, i decided not to rush to my meditation practice and dharma talk, but instead to relish in a quiet at home. lit a fire, made some soup (but got full on the dessert i heated up in the process - oh, and the heaps of cool whip), and am settling in for a slow evening at home. i have a tendency to shove too much into a day and then am left with no space between meetings. this leaves me late for the next appointment, disheveled, and frustrated by the lack of space. um, who plans all these meetings? moi! so, considering last week's silliness rushing to a buddhist darma talk (the one where i arrived 20 minutes late and my cell phone began vibrating during meditation . . . ugh!), i decided i'd spare the meditating beings my "rushness" and chill at home. ommmmm.

i'm getting used to (and LOVING) having thursday nights off. after 8 years, it feels like such a treat. almost like i'm doing something wrong or living that funny dream where you show up to a final exam and realize you never studied for it.

last night my arlington students were complaining about being so achy with this chilly weather and i could totally relate. when i got home i took a nyquil to help my cold-like symptoms and joked with a colleague via phone that it was "nyquility." clever name for a cold medicine, eh? slept like a baby and woke up feeling much better but had that drugged out state all day. those meds stick in your system! i hope you, too, are getting some much needed rest and enjoying some down time - hopefully sans nyquility. that stuff is potent!

started my next series for the examiner on 8 hip and tranquil tips for the holidays. stay tuned for them here. got the first one in yesterday and look forward to this new series that includes tips for yoga-on-the-go, the environment, self-care, and more!

in honor of my quiet night in with louis snoring on my lap and my back to the fire, i wanted to share this quote:

I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure--which is: Try to please everybody. Herbert Bayard Swope

something to say?

after a challenging morning -- where i had intentions of meditating and writing in my journal, only to have them thwarted by numerous challenges (i know, i know "opportunities") -- i met with my lovely assistant. my throat began its gurgling and she told me that she'd researched it. as an aspiring naturopath, she read that it is the result of anger and a repressed desire to express it. gasp! do i have something to say that i'm not admitting to? sure there are numerous frustrations on a daily basis but there are also numerous joys - that's where i need to focus. anger is not an emotion that i would own on a regular basis. but, maybe, just maybe my assistant is on to something. gotta journal about this one!

i did a podcast this morning with someone you are going to LOVE. he wrote the why cafe and shared amazing inspiration. he reminded me of the importance of making sure that i feel fulfilled each and every day. when dealing with some of the transitions and "opportunities" in my life, it can be challenging to remember such wisdom when all i want to do is get through the day-to-day frustrations. finding joy among the painful struggles can be a daunting task. ensuring that i stay focused on the big picture, aware of my reactions, and mindful of what passion led me to where i am is critical. i think you, too, will find this particular podcast invokes a state of reflection.

in the meantime, tell me, do you have something to say that lies beneath? i'll ponder with you.

au revoir montreal

we're all packed up and about to hit the town before crossing the border tonight. we thought getting a small start on the long journey home before monday morning may make monday feel a little lighter - especially since mondays always feel a little heavy anyway, agree?

during my "get your yoga on" workshop friday night i read one of my favorite sutras that i wanted to repeat on the blog:

1.33 in relationships, the mind becomes purified by cultivating feelings of friendliness towards those who are happy, compassion for those who are suffering, goodwill towards those who are virtuous, and indifference or neutrality towards those we perceive as wicked or evil.
(maitri karuna mudita upekshanam sukha duhka punya apunya vishayanam bhavanatah chitta prasadanam)

this sutra is such a beautiful reminder of the 4 attitudes to possess. also a reminder to be less reactionary - "indifference towards those we perceive as wicked." wicked is such a severe word but i remember this sutra being discussed at the jiva training and explained as staying neutral in a situation where you see someone behaving in a way you don't agree with. doesn't mean we ignore everything but that we avoid being judgmental and "holier than thou."

the ability to have space between a stimulus and a reaction is key. i've learned over the years, too, that we don't have to make decisions immediately or cultivate a response, sometimes it is best to sit on things, ponder, and then make a decision or respond. it will be less emotional and more solid. i know, again, easier said than done but i LOVE the concept and try to stay mindful of it when vacillating about an issue.

beau and i did a TON of sleeping here and didn't get the podcast produced so we'll either do it where ever we end up late tonight or when we get back to DC tomorrow night. i think you'll enjoy it as anne returns with some great ayurveda tips for fall! thanks for your patience with our travels.

in the meantime, try this sequence: tadasana, utkanasana, utkatasana twist to right, utkatasana twist to left, utkatasana, sit down into navasana, jump back chaturanga, up dog, down dog, take 5 breaths and keep flowing! namaste.

uh, oh . . . 2 more books

while going through my mail en route to montreal, i was excited to see that michael carroll is coming to the dc shambhala center in february. he wrote the mindful leader: inspiring the best in others and, of course, i had to purchase it once i signed up for his seminar. well, in order to get free shipping, i had to spend $8. so, i browsed more buddhist business books for 40 minutes and settled on start where you are by pema chodren. i adore her and plan to hit an upcoming thursday night dharma talk at the shambhala center and it turns out they are discussing this book. i HAD to buy these - for studying purposes! anything to justify my book-buying habit.

today beau, louis, and i woke up late, hit the dog park where louis ran wild, and i headed off to lead a lovely group of two dozen montrealers through hip hips (2 hours focused on hip opening). it was another divine day here in montreal which finished with a yummy meal at a chinese vegetarian restaurant located off chic st. denis. tomorrow is play time. we hope to hit some shops and are on the prowl for harmoniums. beau is horrified considering my severe lack of musical inclination.

i have met such lovely people during my short jaunt here in montreal; i'll definitely have to return. the yoga community here is vibrant and sponge-like. the culture is tres hip. the food is yummy. the french is music to my ears (wish i could communicate with them beyond "bonjour" and "merci").

bonjour from montreal!

my apologies for the delay, dearests! wednesday was filled with meetings, a nap (got that achy body, feverish thing that seems to be going around), and get out of town prep . . . i SO meant to do a happy halloween post! happy belated halloween!!

yesterday was a hoot. i love road trips. i bring a cozy blanket, pillow, books, laptop, cell phone, and crawl into the back seat with louis. it's like a traveling office! beau loves to drive, i love to ride. since it gets dark so early now, we stopped at tar-jay and i bought a book light. nothing was gonna stop my reading time. i'm a girl on a mission with all these freakin' books. beau asked me last week, when i found my 7th book to purchase on sunday, "why don't you wait 6 months and buy it later? that way you can finish what you have." gasp! how could he ask such a logical question. "but, it may not be on the shelves anymore and i somehow feel better having them in my house - like i'm learning through osmosis," i confidently replied. the conversation stopped there and i took the book up to the counter to purchase.

i took two yummy naps during yesterday's 13-hour journey, ate mango slices, sun chips, cashews, gummy bears, a hot fudge sundae, and a veggie burger from burger king. life on the road. my body was dying for something fresh!

today we woke up late, just in time to grab some bran flakes, a croissant with raspberry jam, and (unfortunate) frozen fruit. when i asked for soy milk, i got a look of horror. so i sunk down into my chair and gingerly ate my bran flakes. this was after i'd poured orange juice all over the counter. i was still half asleep, talking to beau about something, and looking at him rather than my cup. mindfulness in the morning was clearly not my strong point today. i think the hotel waiter was over my antics.

back to the room, called my dear jiva friend jenn (who owns centre luna yoga where i'm teaching this weekend), heard she was doing a noon class so i dashed over to get my yoga on. yum, felt 100% more alive after that perfect class. we dined on yummy sandwiches nearby with beau and enjoyed a leisurely friday afternoon together sipping tea. what an absolute treat.

so far the journey up north has been lovely. feels good to connect with someone i adore (my jiva teacher training pal), spend time in a chic city, get some unstructured time, and teach to a new community. i'm honored.

one more fun thing. i'm exploring taking a creativity coach training. i LOVE learning, have been looking at the program for a few years, and teaching creativity for 7 years. i think this program could be very beneficial on multiple levels, especially personally. one of the bits i was reading yesterday called for unstructured time. it was an "a ha" moment. of course, i know it is important but i love reading from a professional creativity teacher that it is a must in order to stay creative. it's like being given a green light to relax, just be, and refill the well. hope you can carve out some of that creative, unstructured time this weekend. i hope to do lots of it in between teaching! namaste.

p.s. i took a buddhist class on monday night that i've been meaning to post about. stay tuned - envision getting lost, arriving 20 minutes late, cell phone vibrating during the meditation, and dying to learn about the topic - the power of intention. my life thus far as a buddhist-seeker.
