le chic teleclass chat
Tonight was our first le chic teleclass chat on my top tips for tranquility in the new year. We had over 85 people around the world registered for this call and we recorded it so that you can listen in again. Merci beaucoup for participating!
We started with taking a few deep breaths, getting fully comfortable, and grabbing a cup of tea or hot cocoa with our journal, pen, and copy of Hip Tranquil Chick nearby.
Touching on the OMwork, we discussed what you want 2007 and how to get there by determining where you are. See page 73's "Spin the Wheel." We reviewed health, finances, relationships, career, creativity, spirituality, home environment, and self care. After noting which ones are the lowest, we moved forward.
Top Tranquil Tips for 2007
1. Schedule self-care.
2. Define your Vision.

10 X better
now that i feel so knocked off course, i wonder how i'll recover all this time. thank goodness i was able to still stay connected via e-mail and phone + get subs for my classes. but the lost time of connecting with people live and in person plus the numerous big picture pieces on my to-dos left undone leaves me sad. it's kinda like that feeling of realizing that you messed up a new year's resolution. not that you can't just pick up where you left off, but there is something to mourn about the lost time and "two steps forward, one step back" phenomenon. i'm sure there is a lesson in all of this so i'll do my best to figure that out before i return to "normalcy" - whatever that is, right?
in the meantime, i hope you're drinking your echinacea tea, dousing yourself with emergenC, and bundling up if you live in frigid temperatures. look forward to connecting monday night during our teleclass. i'm hopeful my nasaley "accent" will be a distant memory by then!

sickie gone wild
i got a sub for tomorrow's class and am determined to be back in business tomorrow night to assist with teacher training. then on sunday the first creativity circle intensive session begins. so much fun!
beau made me baked cookies (so i'd stop gnawing on the dough) and pizza is on its way. think i'm starting to get bed sores. maybe someone was trying to tell me to slow down?
to end on a less whiney note, i'm sooooo excited to share that i've just finalized the scoop to have a new york city book launch fete on thursday, march 8 from 7-9pm! ny girls (and i know there are a ton of you), please mark your calendars. it's sure to be a ton o' fun and will be held at lolitas. so hope you will grace me with your presence and i promise to have long kissed sickie goodbye.
oh, and check out an interview on divine diva delights - a fabulously fun website!

3. improve a bad day with yoga
i hope you will enjoy. took some cold medicine so hopefully that will knock me out and make me rest. why is it so hard to sit still?

sniffle. sniffle.
read a fun article about hip tranquil chick in yesterday's dupont current. if you have a chance to pick up the free local gem, please do so. it's interesting to hear people's impression of your work.
if you signed up for monday's teleclass, you should have received a confirm today. if not, let me know!
also, i wanted to share one gem from my journal class this morning before i force myself to get offline and sleep. the teacher showed us some of his 60+ volumes of journals. he drew in them, attached photos, took notes, etc. i was amazed as my journals have just been used for spewing thoughts since i was 8. his take on journal writing offered a new, creative spin on capturing life. i used to create scrapbooks - eons ago when printing photos was the norm. now i have them all saved on my computer and rarely ever print them. however, this is a great opportunity to resume capturing life to actually put the goods (ticket stubs, love notes, etc ) inside my journal. genius! we also talked a bit about the popularity of memoirs. have you thought about writing yours?

it's snowing, it's snowing!
as we left, my heart ached and i kept asking beau what he thought louis was doing and if he was ok. then, 2.5 hours later, i called the daycare to check in on him. lord have mercy, talk about attachment! then we picked the little booger up before heading to a fabulous power yoga/yin yoga class at neoalpine yoga and then dashed off for a sleigh ride. quite the adventurous day!
we had hoped to put a podcast together last night on chapter 2 - sensational sequences - but my drippy nose prevented it from happening. we hope to get it together tonight once we hit seattle later tonight. best wishes for a fabulously tranquil start to your week! xo

dear hip tranquil chick . . .
A: sweets, i understand. a home practice is tricky-- for a self-diagnosed coach potato AND the rest of the population. however, honor your efforts thus far. signing up for a 5-class intro to yoga IS a huge step and continuing yoga classes once a week is the way to develop yoga as a habit.
to get a jump-start on your home practice, carve out a sacred space by turning off your cell phone, lighting a candle, rolling out your yoga mat, and putting on your favorite yoga togs and chill tunes.
even though i've been practicing for a decade now, i still struggle with my home practice. even yesterday after arriving in whistler post a 15-hour travel day, i hit the mat. but to keep my practice strong, i put on a yoga class CD. otherwise, it would have been some forward folds, a few sun salutes, pigeon, and savasana. the CD kept me going through backbends, forearm stand, oodles of twisting, and more.
i highly recommend using CDs and/or DVDs to jump-start your home practice and to supplement your weekly studio practice. this will help you avoid the sun salute to warrior 2 back to your couch syndrome that is easy to fall into without a gentle nudge. i recently produced a fun new yoga CD with fabulous tunes catered to the girl-on-the-go to assist with this oh-so-common modern girl struggle.
congrats again on taking this great step to improve your couch-loving self!

15 hours of travel later
en route yesterday i did a lot of reading and almost finished this great book called values-driven business co-authored by one of the ben and jerry's founders. i've read two from the social ventures network series and highly recommend them.
while in detroit, we hit a borders in the airport and i was ecstatic to find me book there. i showed the staff there, introduced them to louis who is on the cover, and asked if i could sign it. then i picked up another book, public speaking for success by dale carnegie. it's a classic and gawd forbid i leave a bookstore without a purchase.
nothing screams winter quite like a snow-filled ski town village. after yesterday's crazy journey, i am delighted to be plunked down in the middle of a little slice of heaven. unfortunately during a closet cleaning spree last year, i got rid of my ski jacket from college so i am donning a large leopard-print coat. talk about screaming tourist in a ski town! maybe walking the black pug while others have their big labs and goldens here also makes us stand out. well, remember the post a couple of weeks ago. it's good to be different. ciao for now . . .

i can't sleep
excited to share that our first edition of hip tranquil times will be coming out today. i hope you love it and look forward to your feedback.
heading to whister, british columbia this weekend to celebrate my 3-year anniversary with beau (and pug in tow). so excited about curling up in front of a fire and watching snow fall while reading a good book (lord knows i have a few of those). i lived in summit county, colorado for a year after college and am like a kid in a candy store about returning to the mountains for the weekend. no plans to ski or snowboard like the old days as it is hard enough to warm up after a 10-minute walk home in the cold, much less in all that gear on the mountains. think i'll stick to snowshoeing or a lovely sleigh ride.
i wanted to share a suggestion from a friend that i'm just delighted about. since one of my goals is to read 2 books per month (already actually finished 3 so i'm on a streak), she encouraged me to write out 100 books i wanted to read so that i'd have a record and feel that great sense of accomplishment that comes from crossing things off. try it. let me know what books you add.
hope you're sleeping like a baby. zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

greetings from asheville!
while reading by carlight during the journey, i came across a beloved quote by martin luther king, jr. that i wanted to share:
podcast coming tomorrow once we return home to our "recording studio" (aka pink palace). off to drive into the smokies. . .
"If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great sweeper who did his job well."

happy friday!
beau, pug, and i are off to charlotte, north carolina this weekend as i will be leading two workshops and a booksigning over tea and cookies at the lovely yoga south. then we head to asheville and maybe a journey through the smokies. back on monday. looking forward to this mini getaway. i've heard from a few of you (even an australian hip tranquil chick) that you'd like to have a workshop or book signing in your town. if so, e-mail me as i'm putting together travel plans for the year and would love to meet as many of you as possible.
take a moment to celebrate martin luther king's amazing work impressively accomplished in 39 young years. he made such an impact on human rights and is a shining example on having dreams and making changes that affect society on incredible levels.
finally, i wanted to share a tip passed along from a fellow hip tranquil chick:
"I’m a faithful blog reader and I just found out about this nifty thing from Google called “Desktop Yoga”. You can set it to remind you to stretch or do a little yoga while you’re sitting at your desk all day and it even gives you suggestions. I just downloaded it so I’m still trying to figure out all of the options, but it seems like it might be something fun to try. You can find it by going to http://desktop.google.com/plugins/ and search for yoga. I just thought it might be helpful to other HTCs!"happy friday, my dear ones!

how are you different?
while practicing at jivamukti, i looked around and noted that the other 60 yogis were in fitted yoga gear while i was wearing a dress over my fitted yoga togs. i laughed because i realized that i was different and always have been to a degree. as a little girl i hiked with a purse, i still do so. when i lived and skiied in colorado, i wore a silver puffy coat from victoria's secret while others were decked out in north face and called me a "baked potato." during my paralegal days i read self-help in the park across from my law firm while lying on a woven pansy blanket. while others were sleeping on the bus last night, i was busily planning 2007 and putting stickers that read "road trip" or "spa day" into my planner. i could go on and on with examples.
you get the picture.
as the bus pulled in at 2:30 this morning, i saw a billboard that said "how are you different?" and i laughed because it is an important question and so fitting. being different can be hard at times as it is lonely but it is ultimately what will set you apart. can you reflect on a few gems that make you unique? remember that gorgeous poem by robert frost on the importance of choosing the path less chosen (with or without stickers)? well, i guarantee you won't be sorry and you'll help pave a path for others!

spring fashion insights
Top Finds for 2007
Wide legged jeans. Bit of a change from the super slim lines we've been seeing all winter, but these very 70's jeans flatter your figure, hugging you in all the right places while giving you room to move! One caveat: take the hemline to the floor girls!
Flowing, sexy sleeves: Juliet style sleeves, bell sleeves, lantern style and flirty poet sleeves. Very romantic and ladylike. Look for them on blouses and dresses, even jackets and coats this season.
Gold bangles. Mix textures—polished, hammered, brushed, braided, even jeweled—and layer them up your wrist!
Gladiator heels. Strappy and sexy, and very up-to-date; from ultra glam to a casual and chic sandal, perfect for jaunting about town.
Dropwaist dress. Such a versatile silhouette that can be dressed-up or casual. Wear with leggings during the winter, then slip on some strappy patent leather sandals for spring!
Loose and flowing tops . Feminine and saucy at the same time!
Boatneck blouses and dresses. So very chic!
Black and white floral patterns. Flirty skirts, fabulous dresses, sexy tops, even handbags and shoes get in on the action!
Little white dress. White is the new black. Get a head start on summer's hottest look.
Very sexy heels. Cross front shoes were all over the runways for Spring 2007. Love these by Marc Jacobs.
Leather backpack. A more sophisticated version of the co-ed carryall is perfect for hauling all your girly goodies around.
excerpt from 1.5.07 shesheme online newsletter.
last night we had a fun book club at the studio that was supposed to last one hour and went for two hours with lively conversations and helpful insights from the participants. we explored the challenges of leading a "double life" (professionally one way, personally another), how to avoid overdoing the self-help craze and being comfortable with who/where you are, and we created vision statements for 2007. thank you, girls, for joining me. you were an inspiration!

2. find the perfect partner with a group of 9-12 grade girls to launch the Tranquil Space Foundation's signature program
3. return to running (i ran 50 minutes once in 2006 and was sore for days)
4. continue to deepen my own practice and teaching (i've signed up for a one-month teacher training mid-april through mid-may with jivamukti)
5. carve out weekly reflection time on fridays
6. determine what is next for my personal and professional growth
7. grow our charity community at tranquil space through volunteer days, sponsoring of aids orphans, and more karma yoga events
8. i'd love to say "play more, work less" but my work is my play. guess it is a matter of balance. hope to take an almost full day off per week for down time with beau
9. design and implement weekly tranquil tips to go out in addition to the soon-to-launch hip tranquil times
10. read 2 books per month (rather than skim 50)

happy hump day!
so far, so good. i've managed to get my goals in order and onto note cards broken up by different categories, been doing my yoga, reading, eating fairly well (minus my run in with gummy dots yesterday), and feeling a bit lighter. however, as i was whirring away on e-mail at 11:30 last night my beau reminded me of a plan to be offline by 11pm each night (um, that was a plan from november). ahhh, i'd forgotten about that grand idea. it sounded lovely so i shut down the computer realizing that no one was up at 11:30 just waiting to hear from me.
thanks to all of you who have signed up for the hip tranquil chick teleclass! we are going to have a lovely showing and i'll get your OMwork out in the next couple of weeks. nothing huge, just some good 'ol reflection. promise.
happy hump day to all. i hope your new year is unfolding beautifully (and you're getting offline before 11pm).

happy new year deux: reflection, intention, action
reflection: do p. 73 wheel of life exercise from hip tranquil chick. create 3 action steps for your 2 lowest ranked categories and write them in your journal.
intention: set an intention for 2007 and write it someplace where you will see it daily.
action: roll out your mat and choose a sequence from chapter 2 of hip tranquil chick or do a full practice such as get your yoga on.
conclusion: write yourself a letter to open on july 1, 2007 congratulating yourself on the actions you took in the first 6 months of the year to get you closer to your intention and who you want to become. this is a great way to affirm your intention.
voila! you're well on your way to a fabulous 2007.

happy new year!
i woke up today saying to beau, "i don't feel any different. have i made enough changes? am i off course already?" he replied with a smirk that we were only 12 hours into the new year, most of them consisted of sleeping, and that i was doing just fine. i breathed a sigh of relief.
while reflecting with him last night, he helped me categorize my goals as i tend to mix goals and action steps. i still want to put a solid list together now that all my action steps fall under a few main goals for 2007. but first, i am off to lead an exciting and sold-out workshop on setting your intentions in the new year at the studio. i hope to record it so that i can share it with you.
if you, too, are anxious about the high expectations surrounding "a new year, a new you," you're not alone. ideally we're striving to improve on a daily basis. however, the beauty of january 1 is that a lot of the world is also taking a moment to reflect on improvement. bask in it. reveal in the positive energy. keep making strides. when it gets to be too much, take a hot bath and roll out your yoga mat. get your goals down on paper. share them with a friend.
i have a good feeling about 2007. may this be your best year yet! xo
